Dish Network - Interactive TV Interface Design
At Dish Network, I worked on interactive television interfaces used by millions of viewers across live TV, on-demand content, and branded experiences. This work focused on designing intuitive, reliable interactions for a large-screen environment where users navigate entirely via remote control - requiring clarity, predictability, and strong visual hierarchy at every step.
The Challenge - Designing for the Living Room
Interactive TV presents a unique set of constraints: limited input, long viewing distance, shared household usage, and constant context switching between content and navigation. Unlike web or mobile, users expect immediate responsiveness with minimal learning curve. The challenge was to design interfaces that felt effortless to use, while supporting complex content discovery, brand integrations, and system-level interactions.
My Role - UX, Interaction, and Visual Design
I was responsible for UX, interaction, and visual design across multiple interactive TV experiences, including:
Navigation systems optimized for directional remote input
Visual layouts designed for distance readability
Interaction patterns that reduced cognitive load during content discovery
Branded interfaces for partners such as NBC, HBO, MTV, Nike, History Channel, and Lincoln
This role required balancing platform consistency with brand expression ensuring third-party experiences felt native to the Dish ecosystem while maintaining each brand’s identity.
Design Solutions — Scalable Interactive TV Patterns
The resulting work established:
A navigation framework that worked reliably across content types
Modular layout systems adaptable to multiple brands and experiences
Focus and state indicators that made remote navigation intuitive
Visual systems that balanced readability, brand, and performance constraints
These patterns allowed Dish to scale interactive experiences without redesigning foundational behaviors for each new partner or feature.
Collaboration & Delivery
I collaborated closely with engineers and platform teams to ensure designs translated cleanly to real hardware. Given the performance-sensitive nature of TV environments, interaction timing, animation restraint, and system feedback were carefully considered. Detailed documentation and annotated designs supported consistent implementation across devices and use cases.
Impact - Making Complex Systems Feel Effortless
This work helped deliver interactive TV experiences that felt natural and dependable in the living room - where users expect technology to disappear behind content. By focusing on predictability, clarity, and scalable systems, the interfaces supported both everyday viewing and premium brand experiences without compromising usability.
